Workshops

Below are two examples of workshops we present:

Arrange to Create Workshop: Working with the members of In Radiance, participants will create their own arrangements of their favorite songs in small groups. Once the songs are chosen, each group will discuss which musical elements they want to play around with in their arrangement, such as orchestration, rhythm, form, mood, dynamics, and tempo. Improvisation exercises help participants explore those musical elements in a safe, creative way, laying the foundation for their arrangement. Each group will then spend time fine-tuning their arrangement, with guidance from In Radiance when needed, having the opportunity to perform it at the end of the workshop. These performances will be recorded so participants can have a record of their arrangements. In Radiance will de-mystify the arranging process and help participants discover that no matter what instrument they play, they can play music they love. This workshop will help students of any age develop improvisational skills, ear-training, and ensemble skills.

Arrange to Create can be tailored to fit class periods and workshop sessions, lasting between 35 minutes to a full hour.

Across the Synapse Workshop: Using their latest commission as inspiration, In Radiance uses the concept of musical motifs to explore contemporary music. Students will create their own motif in small groups, and will direct In Radiance on how to perform it. They will make various creative decisions such as staging the ensemble, how many flutes play at one time, and instrumentation. Once their motif is performed, each group will then brainstorm how the motif could change as it develops. Students will direct In Radiance with those ideas, deciding how to shape their motif across the ensemble. The workshop concludes with a performance of the piece Across the Synapse by Paul Sayed and a reflection about how the motif composition exercise affected the listening experience. This workshop lets students interact with a professional chamber group in a personal and unique way. Students take the role of music director and composer for In Radiance. They will experience the process of making musical concepts a reality, and relate those ideas to hearing contemporary music as an audience member.

Across the Synapse can be tailored to fit class periods and workshop sessions, lasting between 35 minutes to a full hour.

As a part of the group's educational outreach, In Radiance gives 1, 2, and 3-day workshops where participants experiment with different musical elements, guided by the quintet members. The ensemble aims to have an educational outreach component paired with every concert series beginning in 2018.
